Belagavi: Activists of BJP youth wing, led by Rajkumar Topannavar, staged a protest here on Tuesday, opposing the proposal to set up a slaughterhouse at Ramtirth Nagar.

Animal husbandry minister A Manju recently announced the opening of the slaughterhouse in Ramtirth Nagar after the early proposal to set up the abattoir in Hirebagewadi, 20km from the city, met with stiff opposition from the residents.

Topannavar, who is general secretary of the BJP city block, said that the government's decision is against the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act according to which slaughterhouses should be located 5km away from the city. He alleged that the officials took the decision, bowing to the pressure from local MLA Firoz Sait.

Topannavar said that his party opposes the slaughterhouse in Ramtirth Nagar as the area has a predominantly Hindu population and houses many temples.

He demanded action against illegal slaughterhouses in the city.

Vinayak Patil, Mahadev Dharennavar, Irayya Khot, Shivanad Khari and Kedar Javalapure were present.
