A 29-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for his alleged involvement in several cases of attempt to murder, attack on police officers, snatching and auto thefts.

The police said that the accused, identified as Deepak alias Pradeep, was popular as Sanju Baba among his friends as he was heavily inspired by Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt’s character in his films Vastav and Khalnayak.

According to the police, Deepak was arrested during a drive to arrest snatchers. “An information was received that Deepak, who has been involved in several cases of chain snatching and auto thefts, was coming near Kakrola Mod. A trap was laid and he was apprehended,” said DCP (South West) Shibesh Singh.

During interrogation, Deepak allegedy told the police that since his teens, he wanted to become an actor and was inspired by Sanjay Dutt. “He started copying the actor and soon became famous as Sanju Baba in his peer group,” said Mr Singh.

The police said they have recovered a stolen motorbike, a countrymade pistol and two live cartridges from his possession.
