RANCHI: Hundreds of street vendors went on a day long strike and protest march on Monday demanding formation of a proper town vending committee and providing proper rehabilitation facility to them.

Anita Das of Ranchi Footpath Dukandar Sangh said, "The rules say that 40% members of the town vending committee need to be street vendors. However, Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has formed a committee which does not consist of a single representation of street vendors."

Das said the city's 6,700 vendors has demand to dissolve the current town vending committee and form a proper committee having vendors' representation.

The street vendors are also upset about RMC's plans to shift street vendors from their vending spots. Shaktiman Ghosh, president of the hawker's association said, "RMC suddenly feels the need to relocate the street vendors of Lalpur and Birsa Chowk but they do not have any place to rehabilitate them."
