SYRACUSE — While returning fairly close to home, Maryland sophomore Kevin Huerter made a bigger name for himself in the college basketball world Monday night.

His Terrapins lost at Syracuse, 72-70, but the former Shenendehowa High star scored a game-high 23 points and hit a few shots that had him being hailed on Twitter from making them everywhere from his native Clifton Park to Niagara Falls.

Heurter made 8-of-11 shots, including seven of his nine 3-point attempts. A bomb in the closing seconds pulled the Terps within a point. Syracuse recovered with a long inbounds pass and a slam dunk that ran the lead back to three. The Orange immediately fouled (to take away the game-tying option) and Maryland made one free throw before missing the second deliberately.

Syracuse came back and made it a two-point game at the foul line, before missing the second attempt.

Huerter's rebound off the missed free throw turned into a full-court heave with less than a second remaining. He missed just a little wide and left.

But on a relatively quiet night in college basketball, the versatile 6-foot-7 Huerter showcased his abilities – and raised his scoring average to 10.7 points. He averaged 9.3 last year in a freshman campaign that was generally lauded as one of the best in the Big Ten.

Last year he became the first Maryland freshman (and sixth different player in school history) to hit at least seven three-point shots in a game.

Now those hoops fans outside Clifton Park and College Park know how hot he can get.

Huerter added four rebounds and two assists in 37 minutes.
