REL won’t snap power nor recover deposit till supply code is framed
Reliance Energy Ltd (REL),
in view of a large-scale protests from various political parties and consumer
organisations, on Monday preferred to maintain status quo and not to recover
additional security deposit and disconnect power supply of its over 20 lakh
Mumbai suburban consumers. REL took this decision to go in line with the
Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (MERC) observation for
deferring its move till the formulation of Electricity Supply Code under
section 50 of the Electricity Act 2003. The Mumbai Grahak Panchayat had taken
a serious objection to REL’s move and filed a petition challenging it. REL had
initially indicated that it would disconnect the power supply of those
