Central and state agencies have seized illegally held gold worth over Rs 50 crore in Manipur since January this year, official sources said on Tuesday.
Gold worth Rs 29 crore was seized from the Imphal international airport and the rest from inter-state buses and private vehicles along the two highways linking Manipur to other parts of the country.
Police officer H. Chaoba at Moreh said the bulk of the seizure was made by Assam Rifles at the Khudengthabi checkpost, about 12 km from the Manipur-Myanmar border.
On Monday, the Chief Judicial Magistrate (Imphal West) remanded Deepak Sharma of Rajasthan to 13 days in judicial custody as he did not pay a bail amount of Rs 5 lakh after being arrested at the Imphal airport with one kg of gold bars.
