LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Respect sentiments

Sir— This refers to the editorial, “Politics over Padmavati” (November 21). Film-makers always keep the lucrative quotient of movies in mind that necessarily and largely depends upon their efforts to entertain the common man and in doing so, they at times inadvertently or otherwise forget that freedom of expression turns invalid as and when it encroaches upon others’ right to live in peace.

Religion being the most sensitive subject matter, film-makers, while producing movies involving matters of faith, are expected to be wary that their huge labour, vast time and big money should not end up lacerating sentiments of any section of society. Sometimes, such films spark a hornet’s nest. However, those overtly offering bounties, puportedly to harm the makers and the actors of the film, have no right to whip up violence, and should be dealt with sternly.
