Letter: Tax bill endangers higher education
Published 7:13 am, Monday, November 27, 2017
I am writing to oppose in the strongest terms the proposed tax bill winding its way through Congress.
To my mind, any tax legislation must have as its policy goals the following:
1. Reducing income inequality,
2. Being deficit-neutral, and
3. Rewarding savings and investment in energy efficiencies.
It never occurred to me to be concerned about higher education. As I understand it, the current proposals do not address income inequality, will explode the debt, will increase the number of uninsured by repealing the health care mandate, and punish colleges and universities, and those pursuing higher education degrees. Higher education is our most important engine contributing to economic growth.
As a contributing writer to Forbes wrote, "The GOP tax bill is the end of all economic sanity in Washington."
It must be stopped.
