GUWAHATI: When the referee raised Assam girl Ankushita Boro's hand, declaring her the winner in the 64-kg category of the AIBA World Women's Youth Boxing Championships on Sunday night, the crowd in the jam-packed Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium fell silent as the big screens showed the local girl in tears. These were tears of joy and victory.
Minutes back, the 17-year-old daughter of a schoolteacher - who had recovered from chicken pox a few weeks before the start of the tournament here - had just punched her way to a 3-2 victory against her Russian opponent Ekaterina Dynnk in the last bout of the tournament. She was also adjudged the best boxer of the tournament. "I'm so happy to win the gold. I'm overwhelmed by the love of the people over the last several days who have been coming to the stadium to support me," Ankushita said. A large contingent of the crowd was from Ankushita's village Ulubari in Thelamara near Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Sonitpur district. They had travelled more than 200 km just to cheer their daughter.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who presented the medals, said, "I'm so proud that India has emerged as the best team in the championship here in Guwahati. I appreciate Ankushita Boro for her wonderful performance."
