JASSIA (ROHTAK): Contrary to the claim that it would be more of a social gathering for the Ch. Chhotu Ram competition exam and skill development centre, the Sunday's Jat rally here was marked by political slugfest.
Union steel minister Birender Singh from Haryana's Jind and INLD senior leader and Opposition leader Abhay Singh Chautala were the chief guest on this occasion. No other senior political leader from major political party, including former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda or any party leader from the BJP was present. Besides, no film personality as claimed was present.
With Birender on stage, Abhay blamed the state and central BJP governments for creating a division in the Jat community by projecting leaders like Rajkumar Saini and Roshan Lal Arya. "I have supported the Jat community's legitimate demand of quota in jobs and educational institutes from the beginning but instead of accepting demands the BJP regime projected its own leader like Rajkumar Saini," said the Ellenabad MLA. He held the BJP regime responsible for conspiring against the Jat community and blamed the Congress government for passing an incomplete quota bill for brainwashing them into giving them votes.
He also raised the question of sale of liquor to tourists at the museum of legendary peasantry leader Ch. Chhotu Ram in Sampla. He announced Rs 1 crore from his party fund for the construction of the skill centre in Jassia.
On the other hand, while promising to back the Jat community, Union minister Birender Singh, who was present with his MLA wife Premlata, said that he advocated reservation for Jats wherever required. Turning back the heat on Chautala, Birender said that it was time for the community to move forward rather than indulging in politics of credit. "It is not the right time for making political rhetoric but to show large-heartedness and have a vision for developing the skill centre," he said.
The minister further said that if Abhay had announced Rs 1 crore then he might be wealthy enough but he would donate iron of equal amount for the construction of the centre.
Meanwhile, AIJASS chief Yashpal Malik called out names of those who had donated funds for the construction and said that a meeting would be convened on December 3 on Jat quota. "We will announce a big decision on December 3 and this time there would not be long sit-ins for quota and instead storm Delhi on tractors," he said. Other Jat leaders threatened that if the reservation demand was not accepted then BJP ministers would not be allowed to enter villages of Haryana.
