Jurors at the first-degree murder trial for Brandon Phillips were told some issues have to be dealt with before they know if the defence will call any witnesses.

Justice Valerie Marshall told the jurors Monday morning that the court has some "issues that need to be dealt with between myself and counsel."

Marshall said the issues may take "the better part of this week."

The jury was asked to return to Supreme Court in St. John's on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Crown wrapped up its case against Phillips last week, but it remains to be seen if the defence will call any witnesses to the stand.

Phillips, 29, is alleged to have shot and killed Larry Wellman, 63, during an armed robbery at the Captain's Quarters Hotel in St. John's on Oct. 3, 2015.

The Crown presented its last witness on Thursday, calling bartender Janet Hutchings to the stand to give her account of what happened the night of the shooting.
