NAGPUR: The National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organization (NOTTO) under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has selected the family of late Zenesh Pashine from Gondia for public felicitation on November 27, 2017 -- which is the National Organ Donation Day.

NOTTO had called for nominations for Best Transplant Coordinator, Best Hospitals and nomination of a family for felicitation from all over the country.

The Nagpur Zonal Transplant Committee (ZTCC) nominated the Pashine family. In a communication, the government informed Dr Ravi Wankhede, ZTCC secretary from Nagpur, who had nominated Pashine family, about the family's selection. Manisha, Zenesh's wife and Neha, his daughter will attend the felicitation at Delhi.

Neha has listened to a talk on organ donation at Gondia, a small town near Nagpur. She had never imagined that one day she will donate her father's organs. A second year MBBS student at Government Medical College, Gondia, she convinced her mother Manisha and her brother as well other relatives, who took a joint decision to donate Zenesh's organs and tissues. The family donated liver, heart, kidneys, skin and eyes. It happened to be the first ever heart retrieval from Nagpur from a brain-dead person this year.

Zanesh was transferred from Gondia to Nagpur's Neuron Hospital on August 22 where neurosurgeon Dr Chandrashekhar Pakhnode told the family about the brain dead condition of patient and the possibilities of organ donation. Patient was shifted to Orange City Hospital and Research Institute (OCHRI), a transplant hospital.

The patient's skin was harvested by the Rotary-OCHRI Skin Bank to be used for burn patients. The heart was flown to Mumbai and liver to Pune. This was the first time that a heart and liver was flown out of Nagpur. Kidneys were transplanted in city.
