NGT raps EDMC over height of the landfill site at Ghazipur

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday directed the municipal corporations to verify the list of landfill sites submitted by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

‘Filled up’

The DDA informed the Bench headed by NGT chairperson Swatanter Kumar about all landfill sites in the Capital. Further, the counsel for the DDA submitted that 16 of 38 sites are already “filled up”.

On queries from the Bench, the DDA said “filled up” merely referred to the fact that they have been converted into ‘green areas’ currently.

The municipal corporations have been asked to verify the list before alternative sites are selected.

Meanwhile, the green panel rapped the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) for not segregating waste and dumping to an extent that the height of the landfill site at Ghazipur has exceeded permissible limits.

After the EDMC submitted that the height of the landfill site was 65 metres as against the permissible 25 to 30 metres, the Bench said, “Why didn’t your corporation do anything to somehow manage or treat the waste? It is obvious that now you cannot do anything.”

The matter has been listed for November 28.
