Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams recap Tennessee's 42-24 loss to Vanderbilt. Phil Kaplan/News Sentinel
Tennessee's season came to a merciful end Saturday with a 42-24 loss to Vanderbilt at Neyland Stadium.
Here are the highlights and low moments of the game.
BEST OF THE DAY
Marquez Callaway's TD catch
Jarrett Guarantano threw to Callaway on a third-down fade route from the 2 on the Vols' opening drive. Callaway elevated over Vandy cornerback Tre Herndon and made a brilliant one-handed catch for the score. He caught the ball with his right hand and got his left foot down inbounds.
Adams: Next Vols coach's first goal should be to beat Vanderbilt
Keeping the offense on the field
Brady Hoke showed during last week's game against LSU that he wasn't opposed to making risky calls during his stint as interim coach. He showed his gambling mentality against Vandy, too, keeping the offense on the field for a fourth-and-1 at the Vols' 32 with the game tied at 14 in the second quarter.

Guarantano drew Jay Woods offside, moving the chains.
Hoke said the Vols would not have snapped the ball and were just trying to draw the Commodores offside.

A career-long field goal
Senior kicker Aaron Medley finished his career in a blaze of glory. He connected on a career-long 49-yard field goal during the third quarter to trim Vandy's lead to 21-17.

"It was a great note to end on," Medley said. "Great operation. (Elijah Medford) had a good snap. Parker (Henry) had a good hold, and I just really felt comfortable back there and struck it good."

The Vols have closed the season without a SEC win and with the most losses in program history as they lose to Vanderbilt 24-42. Wochit
Medley, who missed two games this season due to illness, was 6-of-8 on field goal attempts this year and 25-of-25 on extra points.
WORST OF THE DAY
Third-down music
Tennessee had one of the worst third-down defenses in the SEC this season. That didn't change in the finale, with Vandy converting on 11 of 15 third downs.
That's reason enough for UT's next coach to retire third-down song "Get Low" by Dillon Francis and DJ Snake. Add in the fact that it's an outdated and not very good song, and hopefully it's been played for final time at Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee's second-quarter offense
The Vols were masterful in their two first-quarter drives, traveling 85 and 75 yards for two TDs. They turtled up in the second quarter, amassing a single yard.
The Vols' fourth-quarter defense
Tennessee's defense was bad all night, but it was particularly crippling in the final quarter. The Vols entered the fourth quarter trailing 21-17 before Vandy ripped off 167 yards and 21 points in the final quarter.
