New Delhi: Vasco Da Gama-Patna Express train derailed near Manikpur Railway Station in Chitrakoot district of Uttar Pradesh early this morning, leaving three passengers, including a six-year-old boy and his father, dead and nine others injured. Thirteen coaches of the 12741 Vasco Da Gama Express, on its way from Goa to Patna, derailed at 4.18 am, soon after leaving platform number 2 of the Manikpur Railway Station in Chitrakoot district, about 250 km from Lucknow, officials said. The accident happened less than 12 hours after a Bolero collided with a passenger train near Lucknow, killing four and injuring two. Meanwhile, a Paradeep-Cuttack goods train jumped the rails between Goraknath and Raghunathpur in Odisha early this morning, officials said.Here are the latest updates and developments from the Vasco Da Gama-Patna Express train derailment:

Three of the accidents were reported from Uttar Pradesh and one from Odisha. There were two derailments, including one in Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot district that killed three people early today morning, one incident of an engine decoupling from the wagon and a train hitting a car at an unmanned crossing. 3.47 pm ISTSix-year-old among three dead in Vasco Da Gama express derailmentChitrakoot Superintendent of Police Pratap Gopendra Singh said a father-son duo—Golu (6) and his father Deepak Kumar (30)—from Bettiah district of Bihar died on the spot. The third passenger died at a hospital. He could not be identified immediately. “Of those injured, two were serious and admitted to district hospital, Chitrakoot. Seven with minor injuries are being treated at Manikpur,” Singh told PTI over phone.
2.09 pm ISTEngine separates from train in UPThe engine of Jammu-Patna Archana Express separated from the train near Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh today, officials said. Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said a coupling fault was found in the engine and the train was immediately stopped. “There was no derailment. As soon as it was spotted, the engine was replaced. The train was then delayed for a couple of hours for this”, he told PTI. The train departed after clearance, he said. (PTI)
1.24 pm ISTUP govt presses ATS into train derailment probeAccording to ADG (Law and Order), Anand Kumar, prima facie a fractured railway track led to the accident “as per local assessment.” “Another possible reason being cited is that due to some technical problem, emergency brakes were slammed, causing the derailment,” he said, adding that it can be confirmed only by railway authorities. The Uttar Pradesh government has pressed Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) into service to probe the Vasco Da Gama express train accident, the ADG said. “We are not taking any chances and hence, ATS has been asked to probe whether there was any sabotage in the incident,” he said. The CM has also declared Rs50,000 for each of the seriously injured and Rs25,000 for those who suffered minor injuries, an official release said. Expressing grief over the death of passengers, the chief minister conveyed his sympathies to the families of the victims and wished speedy recovery to those injured. Adityanath also directed officials to ensure adequate and speedy treatment of the injured, an official release said. (PTI)
12.11 pm ISTGoods train derails in OdishaA Paradeep-Cuttack goods train jumped the rails between Goraknath and Raghunathpur in Odisha early this morning, officials said. However, no casualty was reported in the accident which occurred at around 5.55 am, spokesperson, East Coast Railway, JP Mishra told PTI. He said the train was plying towards Cuttack carrying coal from Paradeep. Around 14 open wagons derailed on down line near Banabihari Gwalipur PH Railway Station, 45km from Cuttack and 38km from Paradeep.

11.33 am ISTRailway ministry announces ex-gratiaThe Railway ministry on Friday announced a compensation of Rs5 lakh for the kin of those dead in the Vasco Da Gama-Patna Express derailment in Uttar Pradesh and Rs1 lakh for those with grievous injuries. Railway minister Piyush Goyal expressed grief over the accident and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased. He said Rs5 lakh would be given as ex-gratia to the kin of the dead, Rs1 lakh for those with grevious injuries and Rs50,000 for those with simple injuries. The minister directed chairman of Railway Board Ashwani Lohani, who is in the state, to rush to the site and also ordered an inquiry by the commissioner railway safety. (PTI)
