Trauma-informed care transformative

For the past five years, the Sidney Albert Training & Research Institute at Northern Rivers Family of Services has been a proud partner of both the Schenectady City School District and Schenectady County in a training and education effort to educate their workforce about the effects of trauma on the children they serve.
Bethany Bump's article ("At school, healing over discipline," Nov. 14) on the transformative change inside Schenectady schools serves as a testament to the positive impact of implementing a trauma-informed care model.
We are grateful to Superintendent Lawrence Spring and Director of Community Services Darin Samaha for the efforts they have made to assist Schenectady County in becoming a truly trauma-informed community. Funding from the Office of Children and Family Services has made the initiative possible and allowed Sidney Albert Training & Research Institute to provide an estimated 100 training days and reach more than 1,200 individuals with this life-changing training.
We hope that success stories like the one unfolding in Schenectady serve as a catalyst for other schools and communities to consider introducing trauma-informed care training programs of their own. Our children are worth the investment.
