Sindhu sails into Hong Kong Open quarters
hong kong: Second seed PV Sindhu sailed into the women's singles quarterfinals with a comfortable win while compatriot Saina Nehwal crashed out of the Hong Kong Open Superseries here on Thursday. Sindhu, who slipped a place to be number three in the world rankings released on Thursday, defeated Japan's Aya Ohori 21- 14, 21-17 in a second round match lasting 39 minutes. It was Sindhu's third win over the Japanese in as many meetings. The Indian faces another Japanese, fifth seed Akane Yamaguchi, in the quarterfinals on Friday. Tenth-ranked Nehwal, however, ran out of steam to lose to China's Chen Yufei and eighth seed 21-18, 19-21, 10-21 in a second round match lasting an hour. It was also curtains for India in the men's singles after 10th-ranked HS Prannoy went down fighting to Japan's Kazumasa Sakai 21-11, 10-21, 15-21 in a 54-minute battle.

Chennaiyin FC outplay NorthEast United FC 3-0
chennai: Chennai: Chennaiyin FC bounced back from a losing start in Indian Super League season 4 as they beat North East United FC 3-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Thursday. It was the first win for Chennaiyin at home over NEUFC in the ISL and only their second victory over their North-East rivals. In an impressive performance, the home side gave the Guwahati outfit the blues. An own goal and a strike by Raphael Augusto put the former ISL champions 2-0 ahead at half-time and then added a late goal through Mohammed Rafi to take home three points.
India static at 105th in FIFA rankings
new delhi: The Indian football team remained static at 105th in the latest FIFA rankings on Thursday. India drew with Myanmar 2-2 at home in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers during this ranking period. Among the Asian Football Confederation countries, the Indian team occupies 15th, ahead of the likes of Jordan, North Korea and Bahrain. Iran led the Asian rankings while world champions Germany are on top of world rankings.
Sumit shocks top seed Kavcic, to face yuki
bengaluru: India's unseeded Sumit Nagal shocked top seed Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia to book a semifinal clash with compatriot Yuki Bhambri in the Bengaluru Open ATP Challenger event here on Thursday. Kavcic was tipped to win the quarterfinal tie but Sumit outplayed him in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at the KSLTA Stadium here. In the semifinals, Sumit will face Yuki who defeated compatriot Prajnesh Gunneswaran 7-5, 6-2 in another quarterfinal match of the $100,000 tournament.
Tendulkar to flag off Kolkata Marathon on Feb 4
kolkata: Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar will flag off the second edition of the IDBI Federal Life Insurance Kolkata Marathon at Red Road here on February 4. Tendulkar, who is the face of the event, said it's his vision to see every Indian fit and healthy. "I am looking forward to being back in Kolkata, the energy and turnout witnessed last year was exhilarating. I am hoping to see more participation from Kolkata this year," Tendulkar stated in a release. The event will carry a prize purse of Rs 10 lakh.
