HOW TO get rid of black mould and damp on walls is a question asked by hundreds of homeowners as they can cause a number of health issues. While opening windows or turning on radiators can help stop it happening, infrared heating could be a more effective solution.
Mould and damp problems occur when a building is not properly ventilated and excess moisture exists. Extreme cases of damp could cause damage to your home over time, but one of the most serious affects black mould has is on a person’s health.
Having such problems in your home can cause respiratory problems, infections, allergies and asthma and it can also affect the immune system.
While mould and damp can be removed by either yourself or professional, and making sure your home is properly ventilated, it may not guarantee the issue won’t happen again.
Infrared heating by design is more effective in eradicating mould and damp problems compared to radiators, according to Funky Heat.

David Cooper of the company explained that unlike radiators which heat air, infrared heating penetrates walls and continues to warm them even after the heating is turned off.
He said: “As infrared heat dries out walls from the inside, it eliminates localised damp and mould.
“It can be a great addition to bathrooms where primary reason of mould is cold and wet walls due to misty conditions.”
He adds infrared is one of the most cost effective heating systems available, as it does not create condensation int he way that traditional convection heating does.
No moisture is allowed to form or remain on window-sills, windows, walls or doors anywhere in a bathrooms, bedroom or living room, so mould does not have the opportunity to form.

What other reasons is infra red heating a good option to have this winter?
David said: “The first thing that comes to mind when we think about indoor heating is radiators, but radiators are not particularly good looking, can be hard to install, are not portable and not the most energy efficient to operate.
“Convection heating (radiators) works by heating the air around us - heat is easily lost through draughts and leaks, once the warm air escapes through doors, floorboards we feel cold again.”
How does it work?
David explained: “Infrared heating works by travelling through space and heats any objects they hit, including your body. Thermal mass of the objects means they release the absorbed heat slowly. Infrared is the reason we fell warm in the sunlight even on the cold day.”

Is it safe?
While the word ‘radiation’ can ring alarm bells for some people, David states infrared radiation is 100 per cent safe.
He said: “Our own bodies emit it - this is how search and rescue helicopters find lost people at night.
“As infrared heating works by directly heating the objects and people in a room rather than the air (volume of the room) there are a number of significant advantages over convection heating.
“There have been a number of independent studies assessing the benefits of infrared heating concluding that its takes a third more energy to heat a room using convection heat, there isa much higher heat loss with traditional convection heating, when compared to infrared heating and infrared heaters can provide the same comfort levels at lower temperatures than convection heat.”
