The NEXT Lily Allen? Paloma Faith writes song blasting Brexit - Brits were 'sold a lie'

LEFTIE singer Paloma Faith faces a huge backlash after she spoke about her new record “Guilty” which looks at the aftermath of the historic Brexit vote.

Paloma Faith claimed that she had put herself in the shoes of Leave voters in the EU referendum, who regretted their vote after the country voted for

The singer faced a backlash after saying that some Leavers “regret” their decision to leave the Brussels club.

Faith was put on the spot by Sky News host Jonathan Samuels who asked if the singer was “asking for trouble” for releasing the song 'Guilty'.

He said: “You're asking for a whole load of trouble here aren’t you, because we voted for Brexit, the majority of the country voted for Brexit?

Brexit news: Paloma Faith claimed that some leave voters were 'mis-sold' Brexit in the EU referendum

“There are many people that say it is the best future for our country. Of course, and yet you have chosen to write a song like this, are you worried about a backlash from many of your fans?”

The singer defended the song, insisting that she was putting herself in the shoes of a select type of Leave voter.

She said: “No because I am not really preaching about any particular political allegiance or whatever, I am literally putting myself in the shoes of the people whose voices I heard on the TV and on the radio, who said ‘I don’t feel that I would have voted had I known what the outcome would be’.

“I am not saying that everyone who voted to leave is disappointed, a lot of people who did are happy with their decision.

“But I was particular writing from the perspective of somebody who regretted it.”

The Sky News host stepped in insisting that some people might find the song “a little bit patronising”.

The artist replied: “Maybe, but I try to make everything unpatronising because I wrote everything in the first person.

“It is about empathy it’s not me saying ‘you made a mistake’.

“It’s about me saying, I understand how you might feel, and I think there needs to be more of that in the world in general.

“I am quite proud of this record because that is what I am preaching, that’s what I want people to do.”

Faith also suggested that some Leave voters felt they were “mis-sold” over what they voted for in the EU referendum.

She said: “Guilty was a song that I wrote in the week of Brexit and it was because I was listening to lots of people on the news and talk radio stations of people saying ‘oh I voted leave but now I regret it because I feel that I was mis-sold an idea and I wasn’t voting to leave for that reason.’”

Faith's latest offering 'Guilty' contains lyrics reflecting on the story of people regretting their decisions – focusing on Brexit.

Starting she sings: “I’ve been a criminal, I made a mistake.

“Believe in the fictional.

“Then let everything slip away.”

Paloma Faith was criticised for claiming some leave voters were 'mis-sold' in the EU referendum

Later on, the song hints the regretful Leave voter has "realised it was all just an awful lie".

The singer caused outrage on social media as viewers were quick to criticise Paloma Faith’s comments.

One said: “Seriously? Sky News has Paloma Faith on to talk about her new anti-Brexit song?”

Another wrote: “So Paloma Faith appears to have no faith in the British electorate or democracy with her new single Guilty, which is about how the British public didn’t know what they were voting for with Brexit and are now ‘guilty’. I wish these out of touch celebs would stay out of politics.”

One commenter defended the singer online for her interview and new song ‘Guilty’.

They said: “Well done Paloma Faith – you made a lot of sense and your empathy bodes well for your child. Brett is extracting a terrible price, not just billions going on lawyers.”

Paloma Faith is not the only British pop star to target Brexit after British voters made their mind up to leave the European Union.

Lily Allen sent a string of anti-Brexit tweets as Theresa May triggered Britain's exit from the EU.

She retweeted a poster who said: "I'll vote for the first f***er to say they'll reverse Brexit and I'm not alone."
