Man Utd news: BBC Sport pundit Ian Wright SLAMS Manchester United after 1-0 Basel defeat

MANCHESTER UNITED just weren't good enough against Basel.

That's the verdict of BBC Sport pundit Ian Wright in the wake of Wednesday night's 1-0 Champions League defeat at St. Jakob-Park.

United went into the group stage showdown aware that a point would send them through to the last 16 of this season's competition.

And they dominated possession with Jose Mourinho's men on top throughout the fixture.

United failed to make a breakthrough though and paid the price for their wastefulness when Michael Lang swept home Raoul Petretta's cross as the game drew to a close.

Wright offered a damning verdict of United's performance while speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live post-match.

"Man United started with a slow build up, I'd have liked to see [Paul] Pogba on the ball more, and with [Romelu] Lukaku holding it up, and bringing other players in," said Wright.

"But they lacked intensity early on.

"We know going to Basel is a tough place to go, but United had enough possession and chances to win this game comfortably.

It was a really poor performance in the end

"Now, it's going to go down to the wire for them.

"It was a poor showing from United, it was sloppy.

"I thought they should have really blasted Basel from the start.

"Mourinho needed Lukaku to get on the shoulder and get people around him, supporting him, but they didn't.

"It was a really poor performance in the end."

Wright defended Mourinho's team selection for the encounter with Raphael Wicky's Basel.

"Mourinho started with [Anthony] Martial, Lukaku, [Jesse] Lingard - so I don't think it was negative football that lost the game for United - it was missed chances and a lack of intensity," he added.

United will be looking to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat when they play Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday (3pm).
