The Hoops were on the end of a 7-1 hammering from Paris Saint-Germain, with the French side carving the Bhoys apart.

Celtic now have to lift themselves for the Betfred Cup Final against Motherwell at Hampden on Sunday, but Tierney insists that won’t be a problem.

And the 20-year-old hopes they can make up for their Paris humiliation by winning the trophy for the fans.

“The fans gave up their hard-earned cash to travel to Paris to watch us,” said Tierney.

“They are a great support and we let them down but hopefully we can repay them on Sunday.”

Tierney missed the 3-0 Betfred Cup Final win over Aberdeen last season through injury.

He said: “It was the first trophy the gaffer won for us last year. Unfortunately, I missed it through injury but I am looking forward to this one. 

“I was gutted to miss the final but the team won it and that is all that matters to me.”

He didn’t fare much better in the Scottish Cup Final against the Dons in May, having to go off in the 27th minute for emergency dental treatment after taking an elbow in the face from Jayden Stockley before racing back to the stadium to pick up his medal and enjoy the post-match celebrations.

“I haven’t had much luck in finals,” said Tierney. After the pain of Paris, it’s now is a case of recharging the batteries both physically and mentally for the Hampden showdown.

Tierney said: “At Celtic that’s what it’s like – you have a massive game and you are not really getting a break.

“We have travelled back from Paris and we have another massive game on Sunday.

“We will need to recover and do all we can to be ready for that game. You need to put the negatives away and think positive. 

“We must learn from it because as footballers you are going to have bad days. Sunday is all about bouncing back.”

Neymar (2), Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani (2), Dani Alves and Marco Verratti all got in on the act in the seven-goal thumping from PSG, with Moussa Dembele having given the Hoops an early lead.

But having lost 5-0 to the French superstars in Glasgow, Tierney claimed the Hoops’ performance in Paris was better. “We played better football, kept the ball more and created more but it was a sore result and ended up a bad one,” he said.

“They deserved it because they were the much better team, but things like Dani Alves’ goal you can’t really do much about.

“As a defender, some of the stuff you just need to applaud.

“They are the best team I have played against.

“Against Barcelona at the Nou Camp we lost 7-0 there and we played terrible that night. 

“On Wednesday we played a lot better but people aren’t looking at what we did on the ball – they look at the result.”

The one positive for Celtic is that Anderlecht also lost to Bayern Munich. 

That leaves the Hoops in the driving seat to claim a Europa League place.

As long as they don’t lose by more than two goals to the Belgians at home next month then Celtic will be guaranteed European football beyond Christmas.

Tierney added: “Everybody is disappointed. It was a horrible night and result for us, but they are a top-class team and are so clinical. 

“It felt like they scored with just about every attack and every goal seemed to be right in the corner of the net.

“It was hard to take for us but it’s all to play for in the last game against Anderlecht. 

“As a player you have to enjoy those nights. We need to learn from the defeats and hopefully as time progresses we’ll get better.”
