Indonesian start-up Evoware, which makes edible cups from farmed seaweed free of chemicals, is relying on its biodegradable alternative to plastic packaging to reduce contamination of the environment, as Jim Drury reports.

It isn't a trick....this glass really is meant for eating. It's made of seaweed-based edible plastic. Evoware's creator hopes to improve Indonesia's dreadful environmental record. SOUNDBITE (Bahasa Indonesia) EVOWARE CO-FOUNDER DAVID CHRISTIAN SAYING: "I saw how much plastic waste is produced here and then did some research. I found that plastic waste takes hundreds or thousands of years to degrade and contaminates everything." Only China dumps more plastic waste in the ocean than Indonesia. Single-use food packaging is one of the reasons why the country's record is so poor. Evoware's solution is to use farmed seaweed to make its packaging which contains no chemicals, allowing it to be eaten. SOUNDBITE (Bahasa Indonesia) EVOWARE CO-FOUNDER, DAVID CHRISTIAN SAYING: "Indonesia produces 10 million tonnes of seaweed per year and is targeting 19 million tonnes by 2020. There are still many more areas where we can farm seaweed and utilizise it." Evoware's range of Ellojello glasses come in four flavours and taste like jelly. The Ellojello ice cream cone wrap is similar, while single-serving coffee sachets simply melt away in hot water. Indonesia's government has pledged to cut marine waste by 70 percent by 2025.
