THANE: An injured infant monkey who was probably run over by a vehicle on Wednesday succumbed to his injuries on Thursday after battling for over 15 hours.

The volunteers of an NGO Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA) received a call from a Bhandup resident who saw the animal in severe pain. He immediately called up the NGO and requested for help.

"The caller mentioned that a monkey was hit by a car and was bleeding so Nikhil Parab and I immediately rushed to Bhandup pumping station. There were no trees where the incident had occurred, so we ruled out to the possibility that the animal must have fallen from a tree and got hurt. Then when we enquired with the locals there, they mentioned that the juvenile was likely hit by a speeding unidentified vehicle while he was crossing the road. As he was bleeding from his mouth, we rushed him to Thane SPCA for treatment," said Vaishnav Khushal volunteer at the NGO.

The doctor at the animal hospital stated that despite lots of tries they could not save the animal and he dies in the morning.

"When he was brought to the hospital he was unconscious and was put on saline. He had got a severe head injury, but he did not suffer from any internal bleeding. Though he was breathing on his own and not put on ventilators due to his critical condition he succumbed to the injuries on Thursday morning," said Dr Madhuri Vidolkar from Thane SPCA. — Shrutika Sukhi
