Duo unemployed, drug addicts: police

Two men have been arrested for allegedly robbing and murdering a 20-year-old student in north-east Delhi, the police said on Wednesday. The student, Lokender, was preparing for competitive exams and belonged to Agra.

Shadab and Vivek Mishra, both 20, were apprehended with a country-made weapon, ammunition, stolen phones, a laptop and a stolen two-wheeler.

They were later found to have been involved in nine criminal cases, ranging from theft and snatching to robbery across as Bhajanpura, Jafrabad, Jyoti Nagar and Karawal Nagar, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-east) Devender Arya.

“Following sustained interrogation, they revealed that they are addicted to ganja. Having been unemployed for the past two to three months, they turned to crime to fund their drug habit and other expenses,” said Mr. Arya.

On November 16, the duo went to Bhajanpura and stopped Lokender at gunpoint near Tikona park. When he fought back, they shot him, robbed his belongings and fled, the police claimed.

Tip-off

“The police received a tip-off around 4 p.m. on Tuesday,” Mr. Arya said.

According to the tip-off, the accused were scheduled to come from Seelampur and proceed towards Jafrabad Road on a stolen white motorcycle. The team laid a trap in front of the school. The accused tried to flee but were overpowered after a long chase. “A case under the Arms Act and other relevant sections of the law has been registered against them. Further investigations are underway,” the officer added.
