Shops at Student Centre to display rates

Chandigarh: The shops at the Student Centre of Panjab University will now display the rates of the food items they serve. Since many students had complained to the student council about the absence of boards displaying rates after the GST rates were revised, the council took up the matter with the dean student welfare (DSW) Emanual Nahar.

"We have been getting many complaints from students that there are no boards displaying the rate list, which creates confusion. We discussed the matter with the DSW and now the DSW office will get the boards for the shops at the Student Centre. After they are given boards, it would become mandatory for the shops to display the rates of the food items served," said Panjab University Campus Student Council (PUCSC) president Jashan Kamboj.

The matter was discussed in a meeting of the student council and DSW on Wednesday. It was discussed in the meeting that the GST had been reduced but the shops at the Student Centre continue to charge 18% GST, which was implemented earlier.

Moreover, the issue of the fight that erupted between the two factions of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) at the cultural festival was also discussed. It was suggested that the teachers would be deputed during such festivals organised by the council. It was suggested that the security during such festivals would be taken care of by the DSW office and the wardens of the hostels. However, implementation of such kind of decisions requires the approval from the university vice-chancellor. Moreover, Jashan said that the students come up with instances where shopkeepers don't pay back change. The shops at the Student Centre have been instructed to stop this practice, he added.

BOX: Dubai trip next year

This year, it is for the first time that the student council of the university is taking the students on a trip to Dubai. The students will have to pay Rs 36,999, which will include air tickets from Delhi and stay, and the council would organise the entire tour. It would be a four-day tour in the second week of February.
