Turkey was the third-most popular holiday for Britons this summer, according to Thomas Cook.

Despite terror warnings following numerous attacks in 2016 and 2017, it has remained one of the top choices for a trip abroad.

Thomas Cook increased the capacity for flights to Turkey in summer 2018, after seeing as 80 per cent increase year on year in bookings to the country.

Family bookings are also up by 87 per cent year on year.

Many choose it as an affordable destination, with good value for the pound and cheaper hotels and restaurants, as well as it having the highest rebooking rate.

With the country using lira instead of euros, Britons can get much more for the pound when travelling to the country.

Exchanging £10 will currently get approximately 52 Turkish Lira.

A recent survey by the Post Office found that families could get up to £96 more for their lira when buying holiday essentials in the country, compared to £117.78 in Nice.

The current travel advice for Britons heading to Turkey can be found on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.

It warns for Britons to stay vigilant and to avoid “the remaining areas of Sirnak, Mardin, Sanliurfa, Gaziantep, Diyarbakir, Kilis and Hatay provinces” in addition to “the provinces of Siirt, Tunceli and Hakkari,” as well as the Syrian border.

A nightclub in Istanbul suffered a terror attack earlier this year after it was targeted during New Years celebration, killing 39.

Turkey also suffered from an earthquake earlier this year which struck tourist destinations.

The demand for Spanish holidays has increased prices, in particular for hotels, after 42 per cent of holidays this summer.

Increased tourism has also caused huge anti-tourism protests throughout many of the cities such as Barcelona.

Monarch Airlines previously blamed a decrease of holidays to Turkey and Egypt for its companies problems.

After going into administration, terrorism was blamed for reducing the demand for holidays to hard-hit areas.
