Budget 2017: Fuel duty set to RISE and it’s even more bad news for diesel drivers

AHEAD of the Budget 2017 announcement tomorrow diesel drivers are being warned about a rise in fuel duty.

UPDATE

Chancellor Philip Hammond has announced that would once again be freezing fuel duty for both petorl and diesel cars.

It was thought that fuel duty would increase in the UK for diesel cars in a bid to combat their usage of air pollution concerns.

drivers are being warned about what is changing in the Autumn Budget 2017.

Drivers of these vehicles have been waned that fuel duty could rise in the Budget tomorrow.

According to The Petrol Retailers Association, Chancellor Philip Hammond informed it that fuel duty on diesel would increase by 1p a litre.

This is the first time in seven years that this has increased and has been done to further dissuade people from buying diesel vehicles.

Fuel duty has been frozen at 57.95p since January 2011 when it increased from 57.19p.

According to Confused.com's fuel price index, drivers already pay 122.4p per litre, a year-on-year rise of 3.65p.

Oil prices have soared by £13 a barrel since the middle of 2017.

This could see fuel prices at the pump shoot up by 12p a litre before christmas.

Petrol fuel duty will however be cut in a further bid to encourage people to not buy diesel cars, reports the PRA.

We have repeatedly warned the Chancellor against such an economically regressive move

Brian Madderson, chairman of the PRA

The hike in fuel duty could generate £800million a year for the Treasury in revenue.

Brian Madderson, chairman of the PRA, said: “We have repeatedly warned the Chancellor against such an economically regressive move because it will push up prices for consumer and businesses already suffering with inflation at a five-year high.

“To force this increase at a time when crude oil and worldwide wholesale costs are ramping up, is also at odds with the Government's avowed aim of supporting the UK economy in the lead up to our formal exit from the EU in 2019.

“Does the Chancellor really want to hammer already hard-pressed consumers, damage the economy, and make us less competitive with our European neighbours?”

There are a number of measures that the Chancellor may introduce in the Budget to clampdown on diesel cars.

AA president Edmund King said it was “ridiculous” to “demonise” diesel as he lashed out at the potential tax hike.

In addition to this diesel drivers could also face a £200 premium tax if they decided to buy one over a petrol or electric car.

However it should be noted that it will be new diesel cars and owners that will be targeted opposed to existing owners.

Previously the Tories have said that any rises to VED shouldn’t ‘punish’ diesel drivers as previous Governments encouraged motorists to buy them.
