Celtic 1 - PSG 7: Neymar runs riot as French giants batter Brendan Rodgers' side

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN proved they were in a league of their own as they hit Celtic for seven.

Neymar GETTY

Neymar scored twice in PSG's thrashing of Celtic

The most expensive strikeforce in world football once again combined to rip the Hoops’ defence apart again in the Champions League.

Neymar and Edinson Cavani claimed doubles, while Kilian Mbappe, Marco Verratti and Dani Alves also got in on the act as Paris Saint-German handed the Hoops another lesson.

The trio, valued at more than £400million, all scored in the 5-0 rout in the Parkhead opener and they came back to haunt Brendan Rodgers again.

PSG took their tally to 24 goals, their most in a Champions League group stage, but they were also aided by some shocking defending by the Scottish champions.

Brendan Rodgers said his team had defended like school boys in the first game but this was even worse – despite the fact they had gone ahead inside a minute thanks to Moussa Dembele’s dream opener.

Rodgers has acknowledged he should have signed another defender in the last window but if he wants his team to compete at this level he needs a lot more than that to bolster his back line!

PSG were looking to claim a modern day Champions League record – the first team to go through the group stages without losing a goal.

Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola had spoken about it pre-match but within 60 seconds it was gone.

Ntcham’s corner from the right was fired across Areola and into the net by Dembele – making it a dream return to the French capital for the former PSG protégé.

Celtic grew in confidence and started to knock the ball about for fun.

Then disaster struck when captain Scott Brown sold Ntcham and his team-mates short. His slack pass allowed PSG to counter and level in the ninth minute.

Adrien Rabiot collected and burst forward before he found Neymar out on the left-hand side and the Brazilian cut in and smashed a low shot under Craig Gordon.

It was a gift and a really cheap goal to give away.

Things got even worse when Mikael Lustig went off injured and Bitton replaced him as Rodgers switched to three at the back.

PSG suddenly had the impetus.

The Hoops still had time to give their hosts another couple of scares before their old tormentor, Neymar, scored in the 23rd minute.

He played a one-two with Marco Veratti and set off a run that saw him beat Dedryck Boyata and fire low into the net.

Edinson Cavani then hit a shot across the face of goal – but the Uruguay superstar wasn’t to be denied for long.

Julian Draxler played in Dani Alves to cross to the back post.  Neymar headed the ball back to give Cavani an easy close-range finish in the 29th minute.

Simunovic was booked and it wasn’t much longer before the referee was noting another PSG goal in his book.

Craig GordonGETTY

Craig Gordon could do little as PSG ran riot in front of his goal

Celtic failed to cope with another diagonal ball into the box. Neymar headed it across to the unmarked Mbappe, who smashed it high past Gordon in the 36th minute.

PSG toyed with Celtic without really putting the dagger in any further.

Celtic had a decent break when Brown burst up the right and picked out Dembele with a low cross but the French under-21 cap could only fire into the side netting.

Rodgers’ team struggled to play the ball out from the back as PSG pressed and pushed until they won possession back.

PSG were in total cruise control.  They played the second half in second gear and could have quite easily gone up another three or four gears if needed.

Javier Pastore came on for Julian Draxler, while Kouassi Eboue replaced Ntcham.

PSG put their foot on the gas in the last 15 minutes.

Mbappe run and cross was cleared but only as far as Verratti, who smashed the ball home.

There were a string of substitutions before Layvin  Kurzawa’s cross was volleyed home first-time by Cavani.

Veteran Dani Alves was next to get in the act as he fired a shot past Gordon from the edge of the box.
