Louisville freshman casualty of corruption
Louisville has announced that freshman forward Brian Bowen will not play for the school and that the Cardinals have parted ways with men's basketball assistant coach Kenny Johnson.
The 6-foot-7 Bowen signed with Louisville in June but had been held out of practice and games since the school announced in September that it was being investigated in a federal corruption probe of bribery in college basketball. Ten people, including four assistant coaches and Adidas executive James Gatto, were initially charged in the investigation.
The federal complaint stated that Gatto and others attempted to funnel $100,000 to a recruit's family to gain his commitment to play for Louisville. Bowen was not named in documents, but details made clear that investigators were referring to the freshman.
Gymnastics: Former Olympic gymnastics team physician Larry Nassar, accused of sexual assault by more than 130 women, including several Team USA gymnasts, pleaded guilty to seven counts of sexual assault Wednesday in Michigan, in a deal that will send him to prison for at least 25 years. Nassar, 54, could be sentenced to up to 40 years. Several Olympic gymnasts — including McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and, just this week, Gabby Douglas — have alleged they were assaulted by Nassar.
Olympics: The IOC on Wednesday announced lifetime bans against four Russian skeleton racers, ordering them to return two additional medals from Sochi. The decision makes for a total 10 Russian Olympians who have been disqualified after revelations of state-sponsored doping at the 2014 Games. Among those disciplined were Elena Nikitina, who won bronze in Sochi, and Alexander Tretyakov, who won gold. Nikitina's Olympic medal is due to go to Katie Uhlaender of the United States. Tretyakov's sanction elevates American Matthew Antoine to silver.
