The Bürgenstock Hotels & Resort Lake Lucerne, has announced that its Alpine Spa opened on November 6, 2017. It is Switzerland’s largest alpine wellness hotel spa.

Offering stunning views of the lake and the snow-covered Alps, the spa is constructed of natural Luserna stone from Italy offset by oak, brass and walls of glass. Its pools are filled with lake water complementing a design that harmonizes with the surroundings. Enormous and light-filled, it ranges over 107,000 square-feet on three levels. Facilities include 13 treatment rooms, three private spa suites, wet areas with hammam, sauna, whirlpools and hydrotherapy, a 24-hour fitness center and a kids club.

Guests enjoy the views from the dramatic 1,383-foot-long outdoor infinity pool – heated to 95 degrees Fahrenheit – that wraps around two sides of the spa building. And with windows on three sides, the 69-foot indoor pool provides equally impressive panoramas. Another kidney-shaped pool, the “Hollywood pool” which dates back to the 50’s when it was used for celebrity parties, is located next to the spa garden.

Floor-to-ceiling windows in the relaxation room bring the calming Alpine landscape in. Parquet floors and light colored oak lining the walls offer a warm sense of wellbeing. It is in this silent zone where guests can relax on loungers, waterbeds and sofas in front of an open fire. Next door in the spa lounge, also with lake views, there are rooms for meetings, private conversations and relaxing over a herbal tea or fresh juice. From here, guests can continue on to the hot and cold Kneipp baths, a large Alpine Rasul bath with seating niches, a saline bath, and two infra-red cabins and nap shells.

Further on is a clothing-free spa zone for women and men 16 years and older and a ladies’ spa, also clothing free and exclusively for women. Both have cold and warm water pools, jacuzzis, herbal steam baths, rock showers, aroma saunas and relaxation rooms. Each area also has a Finnish sauna, with the sauna in the co-ed area boasting a panoramic window and open fireplace. The co-ed spa has an ice room and an alpine eco-pool.

A wall of natural rock, an open fireplace and a 17-foot-long white stone desk welcome guests to the expansive main spa reception on the second floor. Spacious and light-filled, the 24-hour fitness center features personal trainers, state-of-the-art Matrix equipment, weights and a studio for aerobics, yoga, Pilates, dance, boxing and other group fitness classes. Spinning, yoga and other classes are held on the exterior terrace.

The Bürgenstock outdoors activity center can organize hiking, biking, climbing, rafting, canoeing, rowing, waterskiing, sailing, fishing, horseback riding, archery, hot air ballooning, paragliding and more. In winter, the resort offers curling and ice skating, and there is skiing and snowboarding nearby at Engelberg as well as cross country, snowshoeing and sledging.

Both the indoor pool with rock shower and the outdoor pool with exterior showers can be accessed from this second floor. A spa treatment area has its own reception and waiting lounge, consultation room, six treatment rooms, including one for two people, Vichy shower room and a saline bath.

The Alpine Spa’s third level has three private spa suites – one boasting an open fireplace and lake views. Each suite has a private lounge area, changing room, showers, sauna, steam, jacuzzi and a treatment room for two.

The kids club occupies almost 2,000 square feet and provides childcare during the day for children 3 to 12 with several areas designated for playing, sleeping and eating.

Natural setting to compliment healthy cuisine

Part of the Bürgenstock Club, the magnificent Oak Grill famous in the 80’s, has been preserved and faithfully restored. Former owner Fritz Frey painstakingly constructed the restaurant over ten years. Huge pillars of natural stone support a ceiling crafted from massive oak beams that Frey had brought from southern Germany. Taking center stage is the massive open stone hearth from the original club. Native stone and oak line the floors, and floor-to-ceiling windows bring in lots of natural light. To the west, guests have views over the spa garden, the Hollywood pool and Mt. Pilatus. To the east, they see the Bürgenstock Hotel, Mt. Rigi and the lake.

In the kitchen, chefs cook sustainable regional dishes and grill organic vegetables and beef and chicken over a blend of wood that along with spices give a special taste to the meat. The restaurant’s dry ageing equipment allows chefs to process the locally-raised meat and prepare it to each guest’s taste.

Pure, natural Swiss treatments and products

A hallmark of the Alpine Spa at the Bürgenstock Resort Lake Lucerne is the menu of locally-inspired treatments using natural products made of indigenous plants and alpine herbs. The spa features products from Susanne Kaufmann and La Prairie, as well as the family-owned Ligne St.Barth.

Susanne Kaufmann is from Bregenzerwald, an Alpine valley known for its knowledge of nature’s healing powers. She first envisioned using Alpine plants in a modern way for beauty and health. Later, together with a team of pharmacists and dermatologists, she developed products with a high percentage of active plant ingredients, energy rich oils like rosehip seed and cuckoo flower and natural moisturizing elements like the fermented flower extract of the white lupine.

Based in Montreux, Switzerland, La Prairie was founded by Dr Paul Niehans with the single purpose of offering a path to rejuvenation. A pioneer in the field of anti-ageing cell treatments, La Prairie has continued to develop ground-breaking formulations using caviar, platinum and gold. One of its most successful products, Skin Caviar is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, essential to combat ageing.

Hervé Brin, founder of Ligne St.Barth, has used his knowledge about the benefits of medicinal plants and herbs passed down from his Breton and West Indian ancestors to create quality products for the face and body from natural ingredients for 30 years. Ligne St. Barth uses frangipani flower, melon, sugar cane and mango butter, exotic oils and Caribbean fragrances – tiaré flower, fine lily and pure vanilla – combined with scientific methods to enhance quality.

The Alpine Spa’s signature treatments include the 90-minute Bürgenstock Stone Massage, a 45-minute Rain Treatment in the Vichy bath, a 60-minute Alpine Facial with Susanne Kaufmann products and a 45-minute Diamond Exfoliation for Body La Prairie.

The spa’s 120-minute ultimate indulgence body treatment is performed by two therapists and features a body treatment and wrap and ends with a caviar massage. Treatments cover the spectrum including massages; salt scrubs, packs and herbal wraps; facials; treatment baths, and other beauty treatments such as manicures and pedicures.
