Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wedding IMMINENT: Archbishop asked for blessing - EXCLUSIVE

THE Archbishop of Canterbury is to be asked to give his blessing to a church wedding for Prince Harry and US divorcee Meghan Markle, the Daily Express understands.

Archbishop Justin Welby is said to have no objections, clearing the way for a royal wedding at Westminster Abbey or another Anglican venue in 2018.

Officials at the Abbey, who have previously confirmed they allow divorced people to wed there, said the couple would require a marriage licence from the Archbishop’s faculty office.

Alternative venues for a religious service include St Paul’s Cathedral or St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

The Archbishop, on a three-day visit to Moscow, had no comment yesterday when asked if he had been in discussions with the Royal Household.

Within 30 seconds of one another, both his office at Lambeth Palace and Kensington Palace, where Harry lives in a bachelor pad, declined to discuss a possible wedding.

Harry, 33, and Meghan, 36, are said to be “blissfully happy” after dating for 16 months.

An engagement announcement is expected either at the end of this year or early in 2018.

Toronto-based Meghan, who stars as legal associate Rachel Zane in American TV drama Suits, was spotted out and about in London yesterday.

She was photographed at ladies’ beachwear shop Heidi Klein in Pavilion Road, Chelsea, close to trendy King’s Road and Sloane Street.

Stylish Meghan wore shades and looked snugly wrapped up in a long grey scarf, grey jacket and black jeans.

She is expected to spend the next few days on a romantic break with Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne.

There have been questions about whether the Church would allow a traditional royal wedding because of Meghan’s previous marriage and her religious background.

She was educated at Immaculate Heart High School, an all-girl, private Catholic school in Los Angeles.

She has also spoken with pride of her mixed-race heritage and was previously married to a Jewish TV producer, Trevor Engelson.

But it appears her background will be no impediment to an Anglican church wedding.

Last month Meghan was reported to have met the Queen over tea at Buckingham Palace.

The 91-year-old monarch’s permission is needed for Harry – and anyone else in the first six in line to the throne – to wed.

One source said it would be “fitting and appropriate” for the couple to tie the knot in the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s 70th anniversary year.

In the past a wedding between a senior royal and a divorced person would have been out of the question.

King Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 so he could marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

And in the 1950s Princess Margaret was forbidden to marry RAF war hero Group Captain Peter Townsend.

But in 2002 the General Synod changed its rules to let divorced people wed in the Church of England.

This paved the way for Prince Charles to marry the divorced Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005.

Even then, sensitivities over their earlier affair during Charles’s marriage to Princess Diana and the role of the sovereign as Supreme Governor of the Church of England meant they married in a civil ceremony in Windsor Guildhall.

The 2002 rules say it is up to individual ministers to decide whether to “solemnise marriage after divorce”.

But they also advise giving consideration as to whether the new marriage may be “tantamount to consecrating an old infidelity”.

A 314-year-old law banning royals from marrying Catholics and still retaining their line in the succession to the throne was changed in 2015.
