UP has fast becoming the ‘state of rape’. Three women were gang raped on the National Highway-91 and National Highway-24 within the gap of just one week in the state. What follows this unfortunate and heinous crime is more insulting not only for the womenfolk but also for the entire nation. The Akhilesh Yadav Government in UP has suspended two senior police officials-one Senior Superintendent of Police and another, a station officer, of Bulandshahr and Bareilly respectively.
Apart from this, the SP Government had rushed the Additional Director General (law and order) to the crime spot and also asked the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and the DGP to personally monitor the whole incident and enquiry. It is all fine for the moment, but the shameless SP Government has shown its real color too.
Of course, what more people can expect from this government which had viewed violence against women, particularly rape in very poor light in the past. The ‘Netaji’, Mulayam Singh Yadav who once referred to the Mumbai Shakti Mil’s rape case and said that ‘boys commit such mistakes’. And now his senior Minister Azam Khan views rape as a political conspiracy against the SP Government. It is a big shame on these politicians who have never learnt how to respect their own mothers, sisters and daughters. After making such an outrageous remark, the Akhilesh Government is drawing flak from all political parties. Currently BJP is demanding a CBI enquiry to the Bulandshahr rape incident. Sadly, the recent statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau reveals that there has been a rise of 161 percent in rape cases only in just one year from 2014-15 in the State.
The rape cases have gone up from 3467 in 2014 to 9075 in 2015. Worrisome as many crime observers say is that even the cases of attempted rape have also seen a 30 percent rise. It is shocking for the entire nation and there must be through enquiry about the sad saga of rape in UP. Our womenfolk must be allowed to live in dignity and they should lead a safe life both at home and in workplace. Whatsoever it may be, politicians must restrain from making irresponsible remarks on women and on all sensitive issues of national and international importance. UP must set a trend of making women safe across the State and Akhilesh should show the door to Azam Khan at the earliest. Hope he does a bit at least for the sake of safety of women!
