NAGPUR: The Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) attached to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has completed 25 kidney transplants started since February 2016. It is claimed that this is the fastest ever 25 transplants in any government medical college in the state. This includes one cadaver transplant, too.
Dr Charulata Bawankule, the head of the nephrology department at the SSH told TOI that a 56-year-old father Shamlal Gupta donated his kidney to his 32-year-old son Kamlesh Gupta. This is the fourth father to son donation as majority of the donations have been by women, by mothers (12), sisters (3) and wives (5). The first transplant was done on February 9, 2016 and the first cadaver transplant was done on March 10, 2017.
"It is a matter of pride for the hospital. In first year we did nine transplants and in this year, we have completed 16 transplants. This is a record in itself in the government sector," said the GMCH dean Dr A Niswade.
The dean said that efforts were on to go for more cadaver donations. It requires a special team of social workers to motivate the family members to donate organs of the brain-dead persons.
The team of nephrologists, urologists and anaesthetists at SSH besides Dr Bawankule includes DR Sameer Chaubey, Dr Vishal Ramteke, Dr Piyush Kimmatkar, Dr Vandana Adamane, Dr Sanjay Kolte, Dr Dhanjay Selukar, Dr Kalpana Kulkarni, Dr Aditya Singh, Dr Kunal Meshram and Dr Vijay Sortey and his anaesthetist team.
In the 25 kidney transplants there have been certain complicated cases as well. There were patients of hepatitis C in which the patient was first treated for the infection and then the transplant was done. There were patients of sickle cell too who underwent transplant.
