Sorry London! Macron gloats after Paris wins battle for London-based banking agency

EMMANUEL Macron hailed the decision to relocate the European Banking Authority (EBA) from London to Paris following Britain’s exit from the bloc, saying that it was recognition of France’s attractiveness and pro-Europe initiatives.

The move would bring “tens of thousands “of banking jobs to the French capital, his team boasted.

And the 39-year-old president took to Twitter to say: “Paris will host the European Banking Agency! It’s a recognition of France’s attractiveness and European commitment. Happy and proud of our country.”

In a statement published hours later, the Élysée Palace reiterated the gloating president’s earlier comments, adding the relocation decision on the banking authority cemented Paris’ position as a “major” financial hub.

The Élysée Palace also said Mr Macron wanted to “thank his European partners for their trust,” adding the EU could count on France to “make sure that the relocation process is a success”.

Government spokesperson Christophe Castaner, the newly elected leader of Mr Macron’s centrist Republic on the Move party, said the EBA would bring “tens of thousands” of banking jobs to Paris and lure Brexit-sceptic bankers to the French capital.

And Mr Macron was not the only French official to tweet his delight at the news.

Paris’ socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo said: “It means that Paris is attractive. The banking authority will boost Paris’ credibility as a top European financial centre.”

Mr Macron’s conservative finance chief Bruno Le Maire said Paris’ win was a “sign of France’s attractiveness,” while Benjamin Griveaux, the secretary of state for economic affairs, tweeted: “The 27 have chosen: Paris will host the EBA! A new victory for France’s attractiveness.”

Earlier on Monday, Amsterdam won a fight to host the London-based European Medicines Agency (EMA). While 16 cities bid for the EMA, eight bid for the EBA, including Dublin, Warsaw, Brussels, Frankfurt and Luxembourg City.

The two key EU agencies currently employ around 1,000 people in London: the EMA employs around 900 people, while the EBA employs around 100.
