Bihar BJP chief Nityanand Rai drew flak for his remarks that fingers raised at PM Narendra Modi will either be 'broken or chopped off'.
Rai, a Lok Sabha member from Ujiyarpur, on Monday said: "Unki ore uthne waali ungli ko, uthne waale haath ko, hum sub milke ya toh tod dein, zaroorat padi to kaat dein" (Any finger or hand raised against the PM should either be broken by us or, if need be, cut).
After having faced severe criticism from the Opposition and the masses, on Tuesday he said: "I used the expression as a metaphor to convey that we would deal sternly with those who rise against the country's pride. If it has hurt anybody I express regret."
He added that his words were twisted out of context and that some newspapers carried a mischievous misinterpretation of his speech at a function in Patna on Monday.
