Glorifying Sultan

| | Via email
Sir—This refers to the articles, “Bigot called Tipu Sultan” and  “Exorcising the ghost of Tipu Sultan” (November 14 and 15) by Aparna Patwardhan. In view of the controversy concerning the 18th century ruler of Mysore, the Karnataka Government marked Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary on November 10 and left the opponents aghast. It was contended that primarily, Tipu destroyed hundreds of temples and churches, turning them into mosques. His fight against the then British rulers was to save his sultanate. The writer has rightly highlighted Tipu’s reprehensible anti-Hindu tyranny by citing historical accounts. To begin with, it is an inscription on Tipu’s sword: “My victorious sabre is lightning for the destruction of the unbelievers those who refuse the faith of Muhammed” It is disgusting that the Congress, with criminal tendency to pursue vote-bank politics, has glorified Tipu Sultan.
