GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal urged the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Minister Rashed Khan Menon to take steps for introducing direct flight from Dhaka to Guwahati in a bid to boost connectivity in the region and improve trade and commerce.

Sonowal mentioned that improved air connectivity between Dhaka and Guwahati would be of mutual benefit to both Assam and Bangladesh. Chief Minister also requested the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Minister to accelerate trade and commerce with Assam through the International Trade Centres located at Assam-Bangladesh border at Golakganj in Dhubri district, Mankachar in South Salmara district and Sutarkandi in Karimganj district.

Menon assured the Chief Minister to positively consider his proposal. Sonowal participated in North East Development Summit at Imphal in Manipur.

Sonowal advocated for synergistic efforts on the part of all the North Eastern States to expedite the development of North East and place the region as a centre of new paradigm of Act East Policy.

Sonowal said that a symbiotic approach of all the states of the North East to highlight and explore the potential of North-East covering all the aspects of trade and investment, connectivity and infrastructure, development, tourism, skill development and entrepreneurship would augur well in spearheading a new growth mantra for the region.

Sonowal said that the recent extension of International Fibre Optic Gateway at Cox Bazar in Bangladesh to Tripura would further accelerate the vision of digital North East.
