Video conferencing systems at Coimbatore jail to be upgraded soon

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore Central Prison authorities are planning to upgrade the video conferencing system at the facility to 4G after the existing system stopped working 24 days ago.

Video conferencing facility was used for interrogations and court proceedings. "In its absence, prisoners, including high-risk prisoners like Maoists and bomb blast case accused lodged here, have to be taken in and out of the jail frequently. It's too risky to escort Maoists during November and December as Maoists from other States are trying to establish camps in the region and may attack policemen who accompany prisoners," a senior police officer said.

Maoists Roopesh, his wife Shyna, Anoop Mathew George, Veeramani and Kannan, were arrested by the Q-branch police from a bakery at Karumathampatti in Coimbatore district a few years ago. While Roopesh is spending his days behind bars in Kerala, the other four have been lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.

"Shyna is facing a few cases in Kalpetta in Wayanad district, Manjeri in Malappuram district and Palakkad in Kerala and a few cases in Madurai, Erode and Tirupur. Anoop Mathew George is facing cases in Kollam, Ernakulam and Malappuram in Kerala, and Srivilliputhur and Coimbatore. Veeramani is facing cases in Coimbatore, Erode, Dharmapuri, Kollam and Palakkad and Kodagu in Karnataka. Kannan is facing cases in Coimbatore, Dindigul and Dharmapuri. The four of them have to be taken to other districts and other States for court proceedings. Armed police personnel have to escort them in police vehicles, which is highly risky," the officer said.

On November 24, 2016, two Maoists were killed in an encountered with Thunderbolt police team in Nilambur forest area in Kerala. "Subsequently, intelligence sources alerted us about possible attack on border areas. Intelligence agencies have also alerted us against transporting Maoists to other districts and States for court proceedings and suggested that we produce them through video conferencing," the offcier told TOI.
