NAGPUR: Chief Justice (CJ) of Bombay High Court Manjula Chellur cautioned lawyers against filing frivolous public interest litigations (PILs), while addressing lawyers at the inauguration of the Late Adv RK Manohar Library at the Nagpur bench on Tuesday.

"Be mindful while taking up PILs. Ensure the litigation is truly in the interest of the public. It is not wise to file lawsuits simply for monetary gains. When you are tactful in choosing cases, you help reduce the burden on the judiciary," the CJ said.

The library was renovated by the initiative of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA), Nagpur. Justice Bhushan Gavai, currently posted in Mumbai, justice Prasanna Varale, president of HCBA Anil Kilor, and secretary Prafulla Khubalkar were present on the dais in the court auditorium.

Justice Chellur appreciated the renovation carried out by HCBA and said, "Lawyers today have technology at their disposal and will avail information at the touch of a button. In the olden days, they didn't have that convenience."

She also advised the present jurists, saying, "Better facilities do not mean you can relax. In fact, it means that more responsibilities will be given to you for which a better environment has been provided."

"I admire the honesty displayed by the staff and lawyers here in Nagpur. Everyone here treats others as their brothers and sisters, and are appreciative of other's achievements," the chief justice said. She also urged lawyers to practice law humanely, "As lawyers, you must empathize with your clients and understand their needs. You must give them the best legal advice and not have an ulterior motive."

"We should choose our goals wisely and for the better of ourselves as well as our institution (judiciary). We must work hard to ensure litigants are given justice swiftly. Work hard so that Nagpur contributes greatly in the dispensation of justice," the chief justice said.

Justice Gavai said, "Justice is the right of every citizen of this country. The poor are as important as the rich, and we must make sure that justice reaches everyone."
