NAGPUR: Stung by the allegations of corruption in poisoning of two tigers in Paoni range, the Nagpur chief conservator of forests (CCF) Sanjeev Gaur on Tuesday suspended forester ST Uikey.
CCF Gaur issued orders to suspend Uikey after it was found that he deliberately delayed cattle kill and crop damage compensation cases in Hiwra round where he was posted. Disciplinary action will be taken against Uikey as per rules.
If suspension of Uikey is one strong decision, PCCF (wildlife) AK Misra has decided to implement Monitoring System for Tigers'-Intensive Protection and Ecological Status (MSTrIPES) system of field-based patrolling in most vulnerable forested villages. The pattern will be implemented in next 10 days.
"We have taken a decision on Tuesday at a meeting with all field directors and CCFs. The WII has submitted a report on villages vulnerable to electrocution. Villages which have been put under very high risk category in buffer and corridors will be taken up for MSTrIPES pattern," said Misra.
MSTrIPES consists of two components — field based protocols for patrolling, law enforcement, recording wildlife crimes and ecological monitoring, and customized software for storage, retrieval, analysis and reporting. "We are also starting security audit soon," Misra said.
Meanwhile, Uikey was suspended after allegations of corruption. According to tigers' poisoning case accused Anandrao Madavi of Pindkepar, Uikey was demanding Rs1,000 to settle cattle kill cases. Tigers had preyed on Madavi's two cows and injured one in the last 2-3 months.
Frustrated Madavi (42), who has encroached upon irrigation land and grazed cattle illegally on forest land, sprinkled deadly pesticide on dead cow that caused death of two tigers. Madavi has been granted forest custody till November 24.
Gaur has issued a warning to field staff to expedite cattle kill and crop damage compensation cases or action will be taken against them.
Misra said security audit of Paoni area will be done by him and on Tuesday held marathon discussions with CCFs and field directors of tiger reserves on series of big cat deaths and implement solutions thereon.
Misra told TOI that security audit of Paoni range will also be conducted. Presently, staff has been just fooling officials on patrolling protocol. "Under security audit, we will now seek GPS records of patrolling from field staff," he said.
"Now that WII has identified highly sensitive villages, we will map beats falling in these villages and also train the staff accordingly," said Misra.
