‘Russian government released a stamp on her, but none in India’

The Congress has criticised the Centre as well as the governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for not organising the birth centenary celebrations of former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi in a befitting manner.

Senior Congress leaders V. Hanumanth Rao and N. Raghuveera Reddy said the governments had insulted the common people, women in particular, by their negligent attitude in conducting Indira Gandhi’s birth centenary celebrations and demanded their unconditional apologies to the people. Addressing separate press conferences here on Monday, Mr. Hanumanth Rao and Mr. Raghuveera Reddy recalled the contributions made by the former Prime Minister including nationalisation of banks and her uncompromising stand on protecting the country’s integrity.

They criticised the Centre for not organising official celebrations of Indira’s birth centenary while the Centre had taken care to see that publicity for the Children’s Day on November 14 was without a photograph of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on whose birthday the country celebrates the Day. Mr. Hanumanth Rao criticised the TRS Government for intentionally not organising the celebrations toeing the line of the Centre.

Mr. Raghuveera Reddy said the Russian government released a postal stamp on Indira Gandhi to mark her birth centenary but no such event was organised here. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu who owed his political life to the late Prime Minister had, in fact, scrapped the name Indirasagar given to Polavaram Project.
