As many as 744 lakes out of total 837 in Bengaluru have been encroached.
Disclosing this to the Legislative Assembly in his written reply to Bharatiya Janata Party’s Y. A. Narayanaswamy, Revenue Minister Kagodu Thimmappa said a total of 2,340 acres of lake/lakebed areas had been encroached by 4,247 persons in Bengaluru Urban district.
To another query, he said the district administration had not filed any suo motu case against these encroachers. The minister said the rules provide for filing criminal cases against encroachers of lakes. There is also a provision for a special court to imprison such persons.
