David Haye vs Tony Bellew: Adam Smith says Haye ruptured his left bicep after slipping on stairs

That is according to Sky Sports boxing expert Adam Smith, who has spoken to Haye since the incident.

The English duo were set to go head-to-head on Sunday December 17 at London's O2 Arena.

However, Haye has withdrawn after suffering the injury during training and is currently in hospital undergoing treatment.

Smith says Haye was in great shape when he saw him last week but a "freak" accident has seen him pull out of the bout.

He says the fight will look to be rearranged in Spring 2018.

Adam Smith on Tony Bellew

“A bitter blow. He has pulled out of his much-anticipated rematch with Tony Bellew after suffering a freak accident in training," Smith said.

"He was in great shape, I was with him last Wednesday, I spent a few hours with him in camp. Lighter, fitter than ever before, he was absolutely 100 per cent.

"There were rumours before circulating that be may have a problem so we went out to see him, we did some filming with him last Wednesday, he was absolutely tip-top.

"But unfortunately after sparring the next day, he went on his usual stair-climb run, so he does sets of stairs for his Achilles, the injury that he suffered in his first fight.

"No problem with his Achilles, six days a week he had been doing the stairwell run and unfortunately on his way down from one of the stairs, he slipped and he has injured his left bicep.

"Currently he is in hospital, having a procedure on the bicep which will take 2-4 weeks to recover from.

"He will the get back into training, so I think they will be looking at hopefully getting them together some time in the spring.

“He was so disappointed when I spoke to David Haye about what happened on the stairs.

"He said ‘I’ve done this time and time again for the last three or four months, the same routine’.

"He came down the stairs, he slipped, he put his arm out to stop his fall on the railing and his bicep was ruptured."
