Mercy Corps Recognizes U.S. Senators Merkley And Young With Humanitarian Hero Award

WASHINGTON: The global organization Mercy Corps has recognized Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Appropriations Committees, and Sen. Todd Young (R-IN), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, with its highest honor, the Humanitarian Hero Award.

"Senators Merkley and Young have been powerful and passionate advocates in the halls of Congress, protecting humanitarian and development support for the world's most vulnerable people," says Neal Keny-Guyer, Chief Executive Officer of Mercy Corps. "Their leadership has been instrumental in mapping a course for U.S. action abroad of which all Americans can be proud."

As leaders on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Merkley and Young continue to promote strong U.S. leadership abroad, preserving funds that provide lifesaving aid to tens of millions of people around the world and help communities overcome poverty and other chronic challenges.

"More than 65 million people are displaced around the world, the highest number since World War II. Mass starvation looms over four countries, with hundreds of thousands of children at risk for their lives," says Keny-Guyer. "We are grateful for their leadership and tireless commitment to making the world better."

Mercy Corps created the Humanitarian Hero Award to honor global leaders who join Mercy Corps in its work to empower people to survive through crisis, build better lives and transform their communities for good.
