GURUGRAM,: Tall claims of heightened security on Bhondsi jail premises fell flat on Sunday with the seizure of 50 mobile phones from inmates during a surprise check by officials.
"An inspection was carried out inside the jail on Sunday and mobile phones were recovered. So far it is not clear who they belong to, but we are investigating and will soon identify the owners," a jail official said.
Bhondsi jail is also infamous for drug deals being struck by inmates on the jail premises.
This is not the first time that mobile phones have been seized from the premises of the jail. In October, a woman from West Bengal had informed the police that her husband, who was lodged in the jail, was being thrashed by the inmates who were demanding money from her to ensure his safety.
An investigation was carried out, but no outcome was reached. On November 16, eight mobile phones and five SIM cards was recovered from the possession of four inmates.
On Sunday, the jail authorities seized 50 mobile, 11 SIM cards, 11 chargers and 11 mobile from the premises. On the complaint of deputy superintendent Dinesh Kumar, an FIR was registered against unidentified inmates under Section 42 of Prisoners Act at Bhondsi police station.
Despite several attempts, Rattan Singh, the jail superintendent, could not be contacted.
