Theft accused dies in police custody

KANPUR: A theft accused arrested by Kotwali police in Farrukhabad district on Saturday allegedly died in custody.


The inspector of Kotwali police station and a head constable have been sent to lines. Vishal Pathak, a resident of Rampur Rajepur, was allegedly caught stealing a two-wheeler parked outside a shopping mall on Thandi Sadak in the afternoon by the people who handed him over to the Kotwali police.


Sometime later, Pathak weas seen lying unconscious on the floor of the police station. He was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead, the police said.


"A postmortem examination will be conducted to find out the cause of the death," SP Mrigendra Singh said. A case will be registered after we receive the postmortem report. Inspector Kotwali Anup Nigam and head constable Chotey Lal have been sent to lines for dereliction of duty. The statements of other policemen are being recorded, he added.
