NOIDA: The UGC released a list of 123 deemed-to-be-universities which have been asked to remove the word "university" from their names including two institutions from Noida-Ghaziabad region.

Through an order dated November 3, the Supreme Court directed that the use of the word "university" by deemed-to-be-universities violated Section 23 of the UGC Act and restrained them from using the word in their name within one month of the issuance of the court order.

Following this, the University Grants Commission (UGC) through a written letter to the vice chancellors or directors of each of these institutions deemed-to-be-universities dated November 10, asked them to abide by the court's directions.
The list of the universities includes nine institutions from the state of Uttar Pradesh including Santosh University Ghaziabad and Jaypee Institute of Information and Technology (JIIT), Sector 62.

Out of the two institutions in Noida-Ghaziabad, the deemed-to-be-university in Ghaziabad which is called "Santosh University" as of now, still carries the word "university" in the name and has said that will also soon change the name to "Santosh deemed-to-be-university".

In the about section of the institution's website, there is a mention in a paragraph which reads that the Central Government of India declared the institution as a "deemed to be university recommended by the University Grants Commission".

VP Gupta, registrar, of the institution told TOI that they have received the letter and will start taking steps to change the name from Monday.

"All the printing letter-pads, official documents have to be changed. We will do it soon as these are Supreme Court orders," he said.

Meanwhile, the JIIT has said that they have informed the UGC that they are abiding by the court order since 2009.

A pop-up item on the university's website says that the same was established in the year 2001 and has been declared as a "deemed to be university" under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 in 2004.

Admin manager of the institute, Ajit Tomar told TOI that the institute had informed the UGC that they are abiding by the court order since 2009.

An official said on condition of anonymity that some names were kept merely because the word "university" was in vogue.
