A historic Saturday night in New Orleans… With 60 percent of the vote, Democrat LaToya Cantrell was elected the city's first female mayor. She defeated former judge Desiree Charbonnet after a month-long run-off. During her victory speech at the New Orleans Jazz Market, Cantrell said her win was a win for the city. (SOUNDBITE) LATOYA CANTRELL, SAYING: "I will not let you down. I will not. I will be with you and I will truly be your voice. Whether it is locally, nationally or globally, I will be that example." Cantrell will take office next year as New Orleans celebrates its 300th anniversary, succeeding term-limited incumbent, Mitch Landrieu. Landrieu and Cantrell, both Democrats, had generated political followings from their recovery work after Hurricane Katrina. In 2018, Cantrell will face issues including the city's crime rate, drinking water system AND storm drainage.
