Digambar Kamat being targetted, claims Congress

PANAJI: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) said that the Special Investigation Team's (SIT) attempts to arrest and question former chief minister and Congress MLA Digambar Kamat were politically motivated.

State Congress president Shantaram Naik told TOI that if Kamat was being accused of condoning the delay in renewal of mining lease applications, the same yardstick should be applied to other ministers and senior government officials who often delay approvals or inquiry reports.

"They are taking vengeance on Congress and its leaders. This is 100% politically motivated agenda," Naik said.

The former Rajya Sabha MP said that the Congress stood by its Margao MLA who is being pursued by the crime branch SIT in the alleged multi-crore mining scam.

An SIT team attempted to arrest Kamat on Saturday night but Kamat was found to be untraceable.

Kamat has already moved an application for anticipatory bail before the district court.

The SIT filed a case in September 2014 against mine owner Prafulla Hede in the case. Kamat has been accused of condoning the delay in submission of applications for renewing iron ore mining leases in the state, which allegedly benefitted Hede, police officials said.
