Allahabad all set for Indira Marathon

ALLAHABAD: The city is all set to host the 33rd edition of the All-India (prize-money) Indira Marathon on Sunday. As the event will be conducted in five categories, the authorities had a busy day with registration of athletes.

By Saturday evening, more than 10,000 participants had got themselves registered for the elite event, which was first hosted here in 1985 by the UP sports directorate.


The five categories are the Open, run for senior athletes (45 years and above), for young athletes (20 or less) and the one for those who are 15 or less in age. In the open category, the athletes will be covering a distance of 42.195km.


The prominent competitors in the men's category are S Pal and Brahma Prakash, Sammer Yadav, Inderjeet Yadav, Sunil Kumar, Aditya Uthappa, Salwar Yadav, Sandeep Singh, Ramesh Kumar Pal and Dharmendra Singh.

Likewise, Jyoti Shankar Gawate, who has won the title in four previous years will be the favorite in the women's department. Challenging her for the title will be Kanchan Singh, Sangita Patel, Rani Yadav, Ranjana, and Suman Bhartiya - all prominent distance runners of the country.


The race will be flagged off from Anand Bhawan at 6.30am by Laxman awardee Pramod Tiwari, while ex-international shuttler Abhinn Shyam Gupta will give away the prizes to the winners.
